Just wanna share my thought on your line, i.e "Journey to God".
The way I understand al Qur'an, the term "people of Israel/Bani Israel" does not belong to any particular tribe of people.
Israel can be understood as a compound word from Isra'=Journey and El=etymology means God. Hence Bani Israel denotes people on the journey to God, or literally people on God's path.
Hope this makes sense.

Been busy lately and sick..:(
I have always understood the term Bani "Isra -El" to mean exactly what you say and not as the "ethnic" or socio-political construct of today.
